Female police officer and black dog

The Lyndhurst Police Department introduced a special addition to their team during a City Council meeting on November 18, 2024. Patrol Officer Amy Barnett, along with her K-9 partner Sonic, a Belgian Malinois, were officially introduced to City council members and the local community, celebrating their recent completion of a rigorous six-week training and certification program.

Patrol Officer Barnett, who has been with the department for three years, is no newcomer to the demands of law enforcement but her partner, Sonic, brings fresh capabilities. At just 18 months old, Sonic, born in the Czech Republic and imported from the Netherlands, is a dual purpose K-9. He specializes in patrol and narcotics detection, which includes skills like obedience, article search, area search, tracking, building search, and aggression control.

During the introduction, K-9 Handler Barnett shared her enthusiasm about their future contributions to the community, She noted that her and her partner are excited to get to work. When queried on Sonic's downtime activities, she humorously added,

"When he's not 'working,' Sonic likes to take it easy in the back of the cruiser."

The importance of such a team was echoed by Lyndhurst Police Chief Pat Rhode, who articulated the dual benefit of a K-9 unit, stating,

"Not only is a K-9 Team a force multiplier, it also allows our officers to engage members of the community in a non-enforcement capacity."
